Jabar

Shoutout to Pigeons & Planes for putting this out there.  DP is a 20-year-old from Virginia Beach with a gotdamn story to tell.  Here, he spits a simple yet complex set of rhymes over a production that’s just as important as the rhymes in adding to the texture of this piece of art.  His debut, Designer Casket, is set to drop this summer.

Main Ingredient

Ever since I heard “Rediscover” featuring Blu off of Skyzoo and Torae’s Barrel Brothers project due out next week,  I’ve been obsessed with this unsung old school jam.  In case you weren’t aware, the lead singer of the band during this particular era was Cuba Gooding, Sr., father of actor Cuba Gooding, Jr.  He became the lead after the former lead, Donald McPherson passed away from a battle with leukemia.  You may remember the song from it being sampled in Wale and Rick Ross’ music before the aforementioned Barrel Brothers song, but the original remains a top shelf soul classic.

Ivan Ave

We’re often too wrapped up in the idea of hip-hop being an American-bred culture to recognize its global reach and the appreciation others have for it abroad.  I randomly stumbled across Oslo, Norway MC Ivan Ave on Soundcloud with a track called “Obedience” off of this short but effective EP, titled Low Jams, which is to be a precursor to an upcoming full length later in the year.  The artist himself keeps it simple:

“I did these songs with the homie. Wrote them in the winter. I care about them and wanted you to hear them now. These and other jams will be on my album dropping in the fall.

Mixed, mastered and engineered by Deckdaddy.”

Apollo Brown

With a dusty, soulful beat that sounds custom made for Roc Marciano, Apollo Brown offers up a sampler from his instrumental album, entitled Thirty Eight.  Cop the album on iTunes.

epmd

I randomly threw in EPMD’s Strictly Business LP from 1988 on my drive to work this morning and I had to run back this jeep banger a couple of times.

Black Thought

I love The Roots, but I need to see a Black Thought solo LP, EP, mixtape, something in the near future.  And before you call his work with The Roots the equivalent of him being a solo MC, consider how dope it would be to hear him just doing a completely off-the-reservation project with producers like Madlib, Alchemist, Ski, Large Professor, etc.  The thing is, Thought is easily one of the best MCs, dead or alive, in terms of skill but I’d be interested in seeing what he creates on his own as well as what he contributes to The Roots because there’s clearly a different kind of shine when he’s just rhyming as opposed to sticking to a concept and sharing the billing with his band.

The Roots

Before you cop The Roots’ new album …And Then You Shoot Your Cousin next week, check out the video for “Understand”.

Meyhem Lauren

Meyhem Lauren offers up a Queens tribute to pave the way for his upcoming collaboration with Buckwild entitled Silk Pyramids.  Look for that on May 27th.

Seinabo Sey

Sometimes it’s the songs that have you first-world-stressed, sitting in front of your iTunes library trying to figure out how to categorize them that have you captivated.  While I don’t know much about Seinabo Sey, I know it wouldn’t be fair to firmly put her in any one category.
