The West :: Blu (Prod. By Bombay)

Blu 1

What I like about Blu is that I appreciate rappers who sound like “home”.  In addition to that, being able to apply that delivery and lyricism to a beat that’s designed to do more than make an Impala bounce but you could still C-walk to it if the spirit moves you.  This is obviously one such beat.  Looking forward to another Blu project and this joint and his other recent output gives me hope this won’t be another dud on his track record.

With My Soul :: The Alchemist & Budgie f. Action Bronson, Aston Matthews & J. Rocc

I get what The Alchemist is trying to do by trying to build excitement around the purchased physical CD again, but I highly doubt making people wait for a physical disc to ship in 2014 and charging $38 for a double album and G-pen is going to make an impact.  It will just make people not buy it.  What if you don’t want the G-pen?  What if you don’t want a physical disc?  Ultimately, the product is the music itself and you’ve got to respect that user may not care for all the excess or to pay more for it than they did for a double album when Wu-Tang Clan or Biggie did it.  Anyway, until The Good Book is available at a reasonable price (or for free) digitally, Ill just have to rock with this and the other single from it.

Vote :: Boldy James For XXL 2014 Freshman

Let’s face it.  XXL hasn’t been about that hip-hop life for real for quite some time.  Either they’re pulling one big annual troll on rap fans everywhere or they’re genuinely not well versed in what good MCs are and going off of “what’s hot” and “what the kids are doing nowadays”.  Either way, it’s been some time since XXL was considered the last credible hip-hop publication outside of blogs or websites.  That being said, you have to love the culture enough to want better for it, so there’s no use complaining unless you’re willing to do what you can to improve it, especially if it doesn’t cost you anything.  Boldy James released his Alchemist-produced debut LP My 1st Chemistry Set last year after two excellent mixtapes and some beastly guest features, so his shine is long overdue…plus, when you see the bums they’ve got up there as nominees, you’ll want to vote for someone who an actually spit and has a story to tell.  See also: Isaiah Rashad, Bishop Nehru, Bodega Bamz, Rapsody, Snow Tha Product, Stalley (?!?), and Tree for valid nominees.
